the bacon explosion

i couldn't resist. crispy bacon wrapped in a roll of sausage wrapped in a lattice-work of bacon. 5,000 calories and 500 grams of fat per roll. i would totally have a bite.

lilly ledbetter

on my morning walks i listen to npr. i learned about lilly ledbetter today. lilly was a longtime supervisory employee at a goodyear plant in alabama. near the end of her 19 year career, lilly discovered that she had been consistenly paid less than the men in the same position she held. the newest member of the staff who held the same position she did made $6,000 more a year than her. lilly's battle for fair pay went to the supreme court, but failed. lilly fought tirelessly for a new fair pay law and campaigned for obama speaking at the dnc and filming a campaign commercial for him. today, obama will sign new fair pay legislation. lilly will be there.

here i go

the key factor in blogging is not what your header looks like-you actually have to write something. the first post is easy because i will simply tell you why i am creating this place.

yesterday was a low day. layoffs across the country. elderly grandmothers. neverending cold. salmonella in peanut butter. plummeting profits. ice storm in half the country. sick husband.

all i really wanted was to laugh or feel uplifted by words i read or heard or images i saw. so i went to a news site. no luck. i had to search in order to find a story in the new york times about embarrassing place names like Crapstone and North Piddle in England. it really needen't be so hard. right, am i right?

if mass media wasn't so focused on negativity, would normal folk have to worry as much as we feel we should? would i be so nervous, protective and uncertain about my future? when will the next positive story be at the top?

i need a jolt-a jolt of optimism. this blog will be that jolt for me, and for you. i will search the web and my life for stories, jokes, images, occurences, factoids and places that bring something other than worry to our minds. won't you join me in the half-full glass?
